Steering wheel mounting
I - mounting the steering wheel without an airbag; II - installation of a steering wheel with an airbag; 1 – sound signal key; 2 – a bolt of fastening of a wheel on a shaft; 3 - the airbag assembly and at the same time the horn button
Steering wheel with airbag assembly
1 – a socket of a pillow of safety; 2 - contact node connector; 3 - contact node; 4 – switch casing; 5 - steering wheel; 6 - airbag assembly; 7 – a plate of an airbag
In Skoda Octavia cars, two types of steering wheel are used. Vehicles without airbags have a three-spoke steering wheel, vehicles with integrated airbags have a four-spoke steering wheel. In both versions, the horn button occupies the entire center of the steering wheel; in the type without airbag, it is really only a horn button, while in the second version, the horn button is an airbag module.
Both types of steering wheel have an anatomically convenient wheel section, the diameter of which is 380 mm. Steel handlebar core coated with IPUR foam (integral polyurethane) with a coarse surface roughness that is pleasant to the touch. The steering wheel is grey. Do not put any upholstery on the steering wheel.
Attention! The airbag module must not be covered, glued or tampered with in any way.
The steering wheel is fixed on the shaft by fitting it onto a conical surface with small grooves. The connection is tightened with a special hex bolt (M = 50±10 Nm).
In the steering wheel without airbag, the sprung head of the steering wheel (horn key) fastened by snapping it into three pistons, to remove it, you only need to pull it off. The connection of the sound signal to the car network is carried out by a brass circular ring at the bottom of the steering wheel, which is in contact with the friction segment on the combined switch.
The four-spoke steering wheel airbag module has two steel pins with tapered tips. The pins have a groove, for which they are held by curly steel springs to the plane that forms the upper part of the horn key.
The airbag module is connected to the electrical wiring by a connector inserted into the assembly from below along the axis of the steering column. The frame inserted into the steering wheel has four contacts, which, when the signal key is pressed, (airbag module) connect the electrical circuit to the skeleton of the car. The electrical connection of the steering wheel with the vehicle network is carried out by a special contact element mounted on a combined switch.
