General safety rules for working on pyrotechnic modules for airbags, seat belt pretensioners and battery disconnection device
Attention! Pyrotechnic assemblies contain substances that produce gas when burned. Some versions have an additional pressurized gas to release the gas. This compressed gas is stored in a high pressure gas cylinder. The pyrotechnic assembly is ignited by an electric/mechanical igniter. Inspection as well as installation and repair work may only be carried out by trained personnel. There are no replacement intervals for airbag modules. Never check with a test lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter. Pyrotechnic assemblies can only be checked in the installed state and with the help of an automotive diagnostic, measuring and information system certified by the manufacturer. When working on the pyrotechnic components and the airbag control unit -J234-, the battery earth cable must be disconnected with the ignition switched on. Then cover the negative pole. After disconnecting the battery, wait 10 seconds. The battery must be connected with the ignition on. At the same time, no one should be in the cabin of the vehicle. Exception: Vehicles with battery in vehicle interior. At the same time, you must not be within the range of operation of airbags and seat belts. Wash hands after touching fireworks in the restraint system. Pyrotechnic units must not be opened or repaired; use only new nodes (risk of injury). Damaged pyrotechnic components must not be installed. Pyrotechnic components that have fallen on a hard surface must not be reinstalled. Before working on the pyrotechnic components of the restraint system, for example, disconnecting electrical connectors, the mechanic must remove the electrostatic charge from himself. Electrostatic charge can be discharged by touching grounded metal parts, such as touching a door latch with your hand. Installation of pyrotechnic assemblies should be carried out immediately after removing them from the shipping container. In the event of a break in work, place the pyrotechnic units back into the shipping container. Leaving the pyrotechnic assembly unattended is unacceptable. Do not treat pyrotechnic assemblies with lubricants, cleaners or similar materials. Pyrotechnic assemblies must not be exposed to temperatures above 100°C even for a short time.
Accident with airbag operation
After an accident with airbag deployment, the following items must be replaced:
The airbag control unit must be replaced after the airbags have been activated, the control unit can be used again, but up to 3 times in total, if the packaging is damaged, if the tunnel within a radius of 200 mm around the control unit is deformed.
All deployed airbag modules, the squib of the battery disconnect device are subject to mandatory replacement
Additionally, after the front passenger airbag has deployed
Dashboard, Deformed Driver Airbag Module Mounts (can't straighten them), all front airbag sensors, other lateral acceleration sensors in case of deformation of the support points near the sensors
Additionally after deployment of the driver's airbag
Return ring with slip ring, all front airbag sensors, other lateral acceleration sensors in case of deformation of the support points near the sensors.
Additionally after deploying the side airbag
Pressure sensors on actuation side, lateral acceleration sensors on actuation side, upholstery, with rear seat recline: side upholstery (if available), other transverse acceleration sensors in case of deformation of the support points near the sensors.
Additionally
Retractable reels of all seat belts with deployed pretensioners, retractable reels of all seat belts with pretensioners deployed (in the presence of), buckles of all seat belts with pretensioners activated when the belts are fastened, height adjustment devices (mechanical and electrical) all seat belts with pretensioners deployed while the belt is fastened.
Note: Deployed tension limiters can be identified by the following: The pin -1- and lug -3- have come out of the tension limiter housing on the automatic belt rewinder. The tongue -2- no longer stands vertically, but angles outwards.
When removing parts of the seat belts as part of an accident repair, be sure to replace their screws. If necessary (after inspection) it is necessary to additionally replace: all damaged nodes. Apply labels after replacing airbag modules (vouchers only) to the registration card. Send the registration card to the importer.
Accident without airbag operation
If the airbag warning lamp -K75- does not indicate a fault, the airbag parts do not need to be replaced. The seat belts must be checked separately.
