Note: To protect the thread, leave the nut screwed onto the top few threads of the steering knuckle pin.
Using ball joint extractor -3287A-, press tie rod end out of steering knuckle. Loosen the tie rod end nut. Remove spring clip -1- from bellows with clip pliers -VAG 1275- and push onto tie rod. Remove the clamp from the side of the steering rack and pull the corrugated cover from the steering gear housing. Slightly move the corrugated boot with the clamp from the steering gear.
Loosen the tie rod with a wrench (nozzles) -1-.
1. Open end wrench, e.g. -VAG 1923-
2. Torque wrench
Note: If there are visible signs of corrosion, damage, wear or contamination of the toothed rack, the complete steering gear is replaced. In the absence of a visible film of lubrication on the rack, the steering gear is also replaced as an assembly. Check bellows for damage "cuts, cracks"; damaged replace.
Tie rod installation
Carefully! The gear rack does not need to be lubricated. Pay attention to different designs of tie rod ends.
Set wheels to straight. To put on steering draft a collar, a cover and a spring collar. Screw the steering rod into the steering tip, maintaining the dimension -a-; a -373±1 mm.
Screw tie rod into rack and tighten with open-end wrench -1-.
1. Open end wrench, e.g. -VAG 1923-
2. Torque wrench
Grease contact point between bellows and steering rod with grease -G 052 168 A1-. Place bellows -2- in proper position on tie rod -1-. Install the spring clamp -1- on the bellows using pliers, e.g. -VAG 1275-. Lubricate contact area between bellows and steering gear housing with grease -G 052 168 A1-. Push the corrugated cover to the stop on the steering gear housing. Using steering pliers, -VAS 6199-, crimp new clamp as shown in illustration.
Note: Only use original steering rack clamps.
Installation in reverse order. After installation, check the wheel alignment. Carry out basic setting of steering angle sender -G85-.
