Attention! Do not press the gas pedal when you change the mode to move forward with a stationary car with a running engine - this can lead to an accident! Never move the selector lever to position R or P while the vehicle is moving - this can lead to an accident! A vehicle standing with the engine running and automatic transmission in position D, B or B must be held in place with the brake pedal, Some torque continues to be transmitted to the wheels of the vehicle even in the idle mode of the engine - an unbraked vehicle will slowly move forward (or back). When leaving the vehicle, be sure to set the automatic transmission selector to position P. Otherwise, the vehicle may start moving - risk of an accident. If the selector lever was moved to position N while driving, then before switching on the mode for moving forward again, you must remove your foot from the gas pedal and wait for the engine to idle. At temperatures below -10°C, the engine can only be started if the selector lever is in position P. When stopping on an incline, never hold the vehicle in place with the accelerator pedal - risk of damage to the gearbox. The ignition key can only be removed after switching off the ignition if the selector lever is in position P.
Automatic transmission modes and selector lever operation
Selector lever/display message
Lock key
When the ignition is switched on, the display shows the gearbox mode and the selected gear. The selector lever can select the following modes.
P - parking mode
In this position, the drive wheels are mechanically blocked. It is allowed to turn on the parking position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
R - reverse gear
Engaging reverse gear is allowed only when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling. Before switching on position R from position P or N, you must press the brake pedal and simultaneously press the lock button.
N - neutral
In this position, torque is not transmitted to the drive wheels.
D/S - Forward mode (regular program) /Mode for moving forward (sport program)
Switching between modes is carried out by transferring the selector to the spring-loaded position V / selecting the driving mode. In D or S mode, forward gears are switched automatically depending on the engine load, accelerator pedal pressure, vehicle speed and the selected driving mode. If the driving mode Sport or Normal is selected and the gear selector is in the D/S position, the gearbox will automatically shift into S or D mode. In S mode, the forward gears will automatically shift up and down at higher engine speeds than in D mode.
E - economy mode
If the driving mode Sport or Eco is selected and the selector is in position D / S, the gearbox automatically switches to mode E. This mode is not activated by the selector lever. In E mode, the forward gears automatically shift up and down at lower engine speeds than in D mode.
Releasing the selector lever in the PhN positions (selector lever lock)
In positions P and N, the selector lever is locked to prevent accidental engagement of the forward position. In the instrument cluster, the counter is on, the lamp is on.
The selector lever is released by pressing the brake pedal and the lock button at the same time. With fast shifting over the N position (e.g. from Z to D/S) the selector is not blocking. This makes it possible, for example, to release a vehicle stuck in the snow by swinging. If the selector lever, with the brake pedal not pressed, is in position N for more than 2 seconds, then it is blocked in this position. The selector lever is only locked when the vehicle is stationary and when driving at speeds up to 5 km/h.
Selector Lever Lock Malfunction
If the selector lever lock malfunctions or there is no power supply in its circuit (dead battery, blown fuse), the selector lever cannot be moved out of position P in the usual way. The emergency release of the selector lever must be performed.
Note: To move from position P to position D/S, the selector lever must be moved quickly. This will prevent accidental engagement of the R or N position.
Shifting gears manually (tiptronic mode)
Selector lever/multifunction steering wheel
Tiptronic mode allows you to shift gears with a gear selector or switches on the multifunction steering wheel. You can select this mode both at a standing vehicle and while driving. The selected gear is shown on the display.
Engaging manual shift mode
Move the selector lever from the D/S position to the right or, on a right-hand drive vehicle, to the left.
Switching to high gear
Push the lever forward «+». Briefly pull the right paddle switch «+» to the steering wheel.
Downshifting
Push selector back «-». Briefly pull the left paddle switch «-» to the steering wheel.
Temporary transition to manual shifting in the D / S position
Briefly pull one of the paddle switches «-» / «+» to the steering wheel. If the switches «-» / «+» not used for more than one minute, the manual switching mode is disabled. Temporary switching to manual gear shifting You can disable it manually by pulling the right switch button «+» and holding it for more than 1 second. During acceleration, the gearbox will automatically shift up shortly before reaching the maximum permissible engine speed. When one of the lower gears is selected, the automation will switch to it only if the engine speed after that does not exceed the permissible maximum.
Note: Manual shifting may be useful, for example, when driving uphill. In this situation, downshifting will reduce the load on the brakes and reduce brake wear.
Start of movement
Start the engine. Press the brake pedal and keep it pressed. Press and hold the lock button. Move the selector lever to the desired position and release the lock button. Release the brake pedal and press the gas pedal.
Stop
Press the brake pedal and stop the vehicle. Keep the brake pedal depressed until you can continue driving. For a short stop, for example at an intersection, it is not necessary to move the selector lever to position N.
Parking
Press the brake pedal and stop the vehicle. Apply the parking brake. Press and hold the lock button. Move the selector lever to position P and release the lock button.
Coasting in E mode
Move the selector lever to the D/S position. Select Eco driving mode. Take your foot off the gas pedal. The vehicle moves without engine braking. The transmission is automatically re-engaged by briefly depressing the brake pedal or pulling the left shifter «-» to the steering wheel.
Launch control function (1)
The Launch-control function allows you to move off with maximum acceleration in S or Tiptronic mode. Turn off the ASR system. Switch off the START-STOP system. Press and hold the brake pedal with your left foot. Fully depress the gas pedal with your right foot. Release the brake pedal. The vehicle will start accelerating with the maximum possible acceleration. When the vehicle accelerates to the desired speed, re-enable the ASR and the START-STOP function.
(1) Vehicles are equipped with this function only with certain engines.
Kick-down
The kick-down function allows you to develop maximum acceleration while driving. The kick-down function is activated in any forward driving mode when the driver fully depresses the gas pedal. Depending on the speed and engine speed, the gearbox shifts down one or even several gears and accelerates the vehicle. Upshifting occurs only when the maximum set engine speed is reached.
