Attention! Before working with a running engine, put the lever in the position "R" and pull out the handbrake.
Check shift mechanism
With selector lever positions "S", "D", "R" and Tiptronic starter cannot be started. At speeds above 5 km/h and setting the position of the control lever "N" the electromagnet for blocking the gearbox control lever must not snap into place and block the lever. The selector lever can be installed on one of the automatic transmission gears. At speeds below 5 km/h (almost stop) and setting the position of the lever "N" the electromagnet for locking the gear lever must only engage after approx. 1 sec. The selector lever can be moved to the position "N" only when the brake pedal is pressed.
Selector lever in position "R", the button on the selector lever is pressed and the ignition is on
The brake pedal is not pressed. The selector lever is locked when the button is pressed and does not move from the position "R". The electromagnet for blocking the gearbox control lever blocks the control lever. The brake pedal is pressed. The electromagnet for blocking the gearbox control lever releases the control lever. You can set the gear for movement. Slowly shift the lever from position "R" through "R, N, D, S"; at the same time, check whether the control lever position indicator on the instrument panel corresponds to the position of the control lever.
Selector lever in position "N", the button on the selector lever is pressed and the ignition is on
The brake pedal is not pressed. The control lever is locked and cannot be shifted from the position "N". The electromagnet for blocking the gearbox control lever blocks the control lever. The brake pedal is pressed. The electromagnet for blocking the gearbox control lever releases the control lever. You can set the gear for movement.
Note: Switching from position "N" V "0" with the brake pedal engaged, it is possible even without pressing the button on the selector lever. Switching from position "N" V "IN" only possible by pressing the button on the selector lever.
Selector lever in position "D", ignition on
Selector lever does not unlock or move out of position "D" into position "S". The button on the selector lever is pressed. The selector lever is unlocked and moved from position "D" into position "B".
Selector in position "D", ignition and lights on
Install the selector in the Tiptronic hole. Backlight "ABOUT" in the gear selector illumination lamp -L101- must go out and the symbols "+" and should light up. The selector lever position indicator -Y6- in the dash panel insert changes from "P RNDS" on "7 6 5 4 3 2 1". Selector lever in tiptronic track, switch to and"-". Selector lever position indicator "7 6 5 4 3 21" in the instrument panel insert when shifting the selector lever to V or must change to a gear up or down (respectively). If the shift mechanism does not function as described: Check and install the control lever cable.
Selector lever position indicator
If all segments of the selector lever position indicator light up, the gearbox is in emergency mode.
Check selector lever cable adjustment
Move the selector lever while pressing the button from the position "R" approx. 5 mm back and hold without switching to position "R". Release the selector lever. The selector lever should automatically return to the position "R". If this does not happen, adjust the shift mechanism. Move selector lever to position "N". Move the selector lever while pressing the button from the position "N" approx. 5 mm back and hold without switching to position "D". Release the selector lever. The selector lever should automatically return to the position "N". If this does not happen, adjust the shift mechanism. Move the selector lever while pressing the button from the position "H" button approx, 5 mm forward and hold without switching to position "R". Release the selector lever. The selector lever should automatically return to the position "N". If this does not happen, adjust the shift mechanism.
Adjust selector cable
Always adjust the gear selector cable if: The selector lever cable has been removed from the gearbox. The engine or gearbox was removed and installed. Removed and installed parts of the support units. The position of the engine/gearbox has been changed, for example, during a stress-free installation. Remove air filter. Inspect to see if the lock washer - see arrow - installed correctly and fixed down.
Note: Lock washer - see arrow - replaced after removal.
Control lever switch from "R" on "S". Check the selector cable boot at the front of the shift mechanism for damage. If damaged, replace selector cable. The shift mechanism and selector cable should move easily when shifting. If not, replace the shift mechanism.
Adjustment
Move the selector lever in the vehicle to position "R". Switch off the ignition. Loosen the screw - see arrow-.
Instruction. With the screw loose, see arrow - the selector lever of the shift mechanism must always remain in the position "R". otherwise, the adjustment is incorrect.
Set the gearshift lever on the gearbox to the position "R". To do this, press the gearshift lever in -direction of the arrow- towards the cable support.
On fig. shown KP "behind". Position -P- is towards the cable support.
Rotate the front wheels in one direction, e.g. move the vehicle forward so that the gearbox lock when parked in the gearbox engages with the gearbox lock gear when parked. If the front wheels do not turn simultaneously in the same direction, the gearbox lock is activated when parking. Gently and easily move the selector lever back and forth without switching the lever to another position of the selector lever.
Note: This sets the selector cable to the optimum position.
Tighten the screw - see arrow - on the gear selection cable without jerking the specified torque.
Instruction. When tightening the screw, see arrow - make sure that the gear selector cable does not move.
Install the air filter. Check the switching mechanism.
Checking the ignition key removal lock
To reach the position "Switching on the ignition" turn the key slightly to the right (do not start the engine). Press and hold the brake pedal. The selector lever must shift with the lock button on the selector handle pressed from the position "R" without "jamming". Switch off the ignition. The key in any position of the control lever can not be removed from the ignition switch, with the exception of the position "R". Set selector lever to position "R". Remove the ignition key. Remove the key from the ignition switch only when the control lever is in the "R". The selector lever with the button pressed and the brake pedal depressed cannot be switched from the position "R". If the ignition key removal lock does not work as described: Check and adjust the control lever cable. Check the vehicle using the -Guided Fault Finding- function.
