Removing
Note. Wear protective gloves and goggles before starting work.
Removing damaged glass
1. Lay a protective coating on the interior elements to protect them from possible fragments of the rear window.
2. Remove the top backup brake light.
3. Remove the rear window wiper (if installed).
4. Disconnect the rear window heater wiring harness connectors.
5. Close all body panels near the glass using special adhesive tape.
6. Remove fragments of rear glass.
7. Using a special electric knife (VAG1561/A) (2), cut off the adhesive material from the opening in the body to a thickness of 1 mm, as shown in the figure below.
8. Remove glass residue from the car using an industrial vacuum cleaner.
Removing undamaged glass
1. Lay a protective coating on the interior elements to protect them from possible fragments of the rear window.
2. Remove the top backup brake light.
3. Remove the rear window wiper (if installed).
4. Disconnect the rear window heater wiring harness connectors.
5. Close all body panels near the glass using special adhesive tape.
6. Pull a special cord inside the car interior to cut through the adhesive joint.
7. Connect one end of the cord to a special handle.
8. Lay a cord to cut through the adhesive joint around the perimeter of the rear window (1), as shown in the figure below.
9. Connect the second end of the cord to the special spooler, as shown in the figure below.
10. Lay a special protective coating on the car interior trim panels.
11. Install the spooler (VAG1654A) to the position shown in the figure below (I).
12. Move the spooler sequentially, setting it in positions corresponding to the steps (from II to VI), as shown in the figure below.
13. During the cutting of the adhesive joint, it is necessary to substitute plastic wedges in the places that have been disconnected in order to maintain a gap between the rear window and body panels.
14. Using a special tool, remove the rear window assembly from the car body.
Note. This operation requires the assistance of a second mechanic.
Installation
1. Prepare the rear window for installation on the body (for details, see the relevant section in this chapter).
2. Prepare the body opening for the installation of the rear window (for details, see the relevant section in this chapter).
3. Install the rear window on the car body using special tools.
4. Allow time for the adhesive to dry before driving the vehicle.
