Removing
Note. To remove the left spring, it is necessary, due to lack of space for a coil spring compression tool (V.A.G 1752/1), partially remove the rear muffler.
1. Raise the car.
2. Partially remove (unhook) rear muffler.
Note.
- Make sure that the spring holder is as close as possible to the coils of the springs.
- During compression, check the correct installation of the spring in the holder (arrow).
- Do not use impact screwdrivers.
3. Install coil spring compressor (V.A.G. 1752/1), as shown in the figure below.
4. Compress the coiled spring so that it is possible to remove it.
5. Remove coil spring.

Installation
Note.
- The coil spring is installed together with the upper rubber washer.
- The stop of the upper rubber support must be adjacent to the beginning of the spring (arrow).
1. Check the lower zinc spring seat for damage and replace if necessary.
Note. The position for assembling coil springs is the same for vehicles with drum brakes as for vehicles with disc brakes (drum brake introduced).
Note. Before fixing the coil spring in the coil spring compressor (V.A.G 1752/1) take into account its position for assembly on the bridge according to the figure below.
2. Install the end of the coil of the spring in the prescribed position (arrows). The end of the spring coil at the bottom must always point forward in the direction of travel of the vehicle.
3. Install the coil spring using the coil spring compressor.
4. After loosening the coil spring, remove the coil spring compressor.
5. Check the prescribed position for assembling the spring, if necessary, repeat the operations above.
6. Install the rear muffler.
