Preparing for a car trip
Before getting into the car, make sure that its windows, mirrors and lights are clean. Check the condition of the wheels, look under the car and make sure there are no fluid leaks.
Check the engine fluid levels according to the maintenance schedule (engine oil, coolant and brake fluid), as well as the level of liquid for washer glass (see chapter 1). Once in the car, do the following:
- close and lock all doors;
- adjust the position of the seat, steering column and rear-view mirrors (see Section 9);
- make sure that the outdoor lighting devices are working;
- check the operation of instrumentation;
- when the ignition is switched on, check the serviceability of the control lamps located in the instrument cluster;
- fasten your seat belt and remind existing passengers of this;
- turn off the parking brake and make sure that the corresponding K / L is off.
Switching on the ignition, starting the engine and switching off the ignition
Note: Description of system usage "KESSY" to start the engine is given in the subsection below.
A description of the key positions in the ignition lock is given in Section 12.
To get started, make sure. that the parking brake is on and all auxiliary systems are off. Depress the brake pedal and do not release it until the engine starts. On models with a manual transmission, additionally keep the clutch pedal depressed. If you do not depress the clutch pedal, a corresponding reminder may appear on the display of the instrument cluster.
Turn on the ignition. Then, on diesel models, wait until the preheat indicator goes out. At low outside temperatures, this may take a few seconds.
On models with DSG, the engine will not start unless the selector lever is in the "N" or "R", and at temperatures below -10°C, start-up is possible only in position "R".
To engage the starter, turn the ignition key all the way away from you. Do not press the gas pedal while the starter is running. As soon as the engine starts, release the key - it will return to the ignition on position.
If the engine fails to start, turn off the ignition and try again after 30 seconds. After three unsuccessful launch attempts (too much fuel has entered the engine) wait at least 10 seconds and on the next attempt, slowly depress the gas pedal to the stop and hold it in this position. If you have difficulty starting the engine at temperatures below -25°C, depress the gas pedal 1/4:1/2 of the way for easier starting.
Attention: In any case, the duration of the starter must not exceed 10 seconds. It may take up to a minute for the engine to start after the fuel tank is completely empty.
Let the engine idle for a long time before driving off (at least. 30 seconds), after which the engine should be warmed up in motion (at moderate speeds). Until the engine has warmed up, avoid running it at high speeds and under heavy load, especially in cold weather.
After a prolonged high load on the engine, do not turn it off immediately, let it idle for a few minutes first to avoid a sharp temperature drop in different areas of the engine. If the engine is turned off at a non-idle speed, the turbocharger will continue to operate without engine oil pressure, which will lead to premature wear of the turbocharger bearing.
To turn off the engine, stop the vehicle completely, depress the brake pedal, apply the parking brake, set the selector lever to the position "R" (only on models with DSG), and release the brake pedal. Then turn the ignition key to position "0". On models with a manual transmission, after turning off the engine, engage 1st or reverse gear.
Button "Engine start/stop"
If there is a system "KESSY" there is a button in place of the ignition switch "Engine Start/stop". replacing it.
Electronic steering column lock
The steering column lock is released within 2 seconds after opening and then closing the driver's door, provided that the system "KESSY" Found a matching key inside the car. If the first attempt to unlock was unsuccessful (for example, if the wheels rest against the curb), the system makes a second attempt. If the lock still cannot be unlocked automatically after that, the display will show the message "Turn the wheel!", and within 2 seconds, 3 more attempts to unlock are made. At the same time, the yellow K / L of the steering is lit. If the lock is still not released after this, the message appears on the display for 10 seconds "Steering column on unlocked", - remove the obstacle and try again.
If the steering column is locked, after pressing the button "Engine start/ stop" the lock is released, consumers of electricity are activated and the ignition is switched on.
The steering column lock is activated when the vehicle is locked and also when the ignition is switched off and the driver's door is opened after the vehicle has stopped. If the ignition is turned off with the driver's door open, the steering column will not lock; in this case, to lock it, close and open the driver's door, or lock the car using the system's touch panel "KESSY" on the outside door handle. If, after locking the steering column, you do not get back into the car with a suitable key, but you still need to release the lock, press the button "Engine start/ stop", - at the same time, consumers of electricity are activated and the ignition is switched on.
The electronic steering lock has an engine protection function that slows down the lock and unlock of the steering column when the button is pressed repeatedly "Engine start/stop" for a short time.
Switching the ignition on/stopping the engine
To start the engine when a suitable key is recognized inside the vehicle and the steering column is unlocked, briefly press the button "Engine start/stop". If the ignition is on and the driver's door is open, the instrument cluster display shows the message "Switch off the ignition!".
To turn off the ignition at a speed of not more than 2 km / h, briefly press the button "Engine start/stop". On models with a manual transmission, when the ignition is turned off, do not press the clutch pedal, otherwise the system will try to restart the engine. On models with DSG, the selector lever must be in position P or N, and the brake pedal must be released.
In an emergency, the ignition can be switched off even at speeds over 2 km/h ("emergency ignition shutdown"). To do this, hold the button "Engine start/stop" pressed for more than 1 s or press it twice within 1 s.
Engine start
To start the engine, it is necessary that a suitable key is in the car, the steering column is unlocked and the ignition is turned on. When starting the engine on models with manual transmission, keep the clutch pedal depressed, and on models with DSG, set the selector to the position "R" or "N" and keep the brake pedal depressed until the engine starts. The need to depress the brake pedal is reminded by a corresponding message on the display of the instrument cluster. On diesel models, the button should be kept pressed also during the operation of the glow plugs - the engine will start when the K / L preglow goes out. Alternatively, on diesel models, you can press the button to start the engine "Engine start/stop" (the ignition will turn on, and the K / L preheat will light up), wait for the preheating system to turn off. press the button again "Engine start/stop" and keep it pressed until the engine starts. In an emergency, you can press the button again without waiting for the preheating system to turn off.
If the steering column is locked when the engine is started, it can be unlocked by pressing a button "Engine start/stop". - consumers of electricity will turn on, the ignition will turn on and the engine will start
If the vehicle key cannot be identified, the instrument cluster display will show the message "Key not found" or "no key". In this case, it is required to perform an emergency start of the engine: press the button "Engine start/stop" and then press the key to it (side with indicator and unfold button), or click the button "Engine start/stop" directly with the key.
