Pic. 10.13. Steering column with lock/ignition lock mounting bracket
1. Steering column tube; 2. Interlock/ignition lock mounting bracket; 3. Interlock / ignition lock; 4. Shear bolt; 5. Shear bolt.
Note: The steering lock/ignition lock is secured with shear bolts; before starting work, make sure you have new bolts.
Removing
1. Check that the steering mechanism is unlocked, then disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Turn off the fastening screw, and take the lower casing of a steering column, releasing it from the top casing. Loosen the two fixing screws and remove the top cover.
3. Before disconnecting the wiring from the multifunction switches, carefully mark the location of the connectors (stick labels on switches and connectors).
4. Loosen the fixing nut and self-tapping screw, remove (if available) baffle plate at the lower end of the steering column.
5. Remove the two top mounting bolts (and remove the clamp and rubber bushings), then loosen the lower mounting bolts and lower the steering column until the steering wheel rests on the driver's seat.
6. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the ignition switch. Ignition lock can now be separated (If you want to) from the steering column lock by unscrewing the two countersunk screws; pre-mark the location of the switch relative to the lock (photo).
7. Mark the shear bolts with a punch, then drill out their heads (see photo). Installation will require new bolts.
8. Remove the steering column/ignition lock. Then remove the remaining shear bolts using a suitable tool. If required, the interlock/switch can be separated from the mounting bracket by removing the shear bolt (as described above); Reassembly requires a new bolt.
Installation
9. Install in the reverse order of removal paying attention to the following.
- a) Position the assembly on the steering column, then connect the wiring harness to the ignition switch. Lightly tighten the shear bolts and check that the steering column lock and ignition lock work properly.
- b) Mark the steering column on the mounting brackets, and tighten the bolts with a tightening torque regulated specifications (Chapter 14).
- c) Jack up the front of the vehicle and test the steering mechanism by turning the steering wheel from one end to the other, then recheck the operation of the steering lock and ignition switch, then evenly tighten the shear bolts until their heads break off.
- d) Connect Switch Wiring (multifunctional), then install the ignition switch trim and upper and lower steering column covers.
