Right oil seal (pulley side)
1. Remove the crankshaft pulley as described in Chapter 7, paragraphs 4 and 5.
2. Carefully remove the old oil seal from the timing chain cover using a suitable flathead screwdriver, being careful not to damage the cover or crankshaft (see illustration). Alternatively, punch or drill two small holes in the gland, then screw in the self-tapping screws and pry the seal out with pliers.
3. Clean the oil seal housing, and use sandpaper to remove burrs and roughness on the crankshaft so as not to damage the new oil seal during installation.
4. Lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seal with clean engine oil, and press it into place so that its outer edge is flush with the surface of the chain cover. If necessary, the stuffing box can be hammered in with a tubular punch or socket, which should rest on the hard outer edge of the seal (see illustration). Please note that the sealing lips must face inwards.
5. Wipe off excess oil, then install the crankshaft pulley as described in Chapter 7, paragraphs 23 and 24.
Left oil seal (flywheel side)
6. Remove the flywheel as described in Chapter 12.
7. Carefully punch or drill two small holes in the gland, then screw in the self-tapping screws and use pliers to remove the seal (see illustration).
8. Clean the oil seal housing, and with an emery cloth, remove burrs and bumps on the crankshaft so as not to damage the new oil seal during installation.
9. Lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seal and the crankshaft collar with clean engine oil, then install the oil seal in the cylinder block/crankcase, sealing lip inward.
10. Wipe off excess oil, then install flywheel as described in Chapter 12.
